Discovering the Kernenturm: A Scenic Tower in Southern Germany

One day, I was thinking about going somewhere that might be good for a photo shoot. I searched the internet. I considered several places. After much deliberation, I finally decided on a dance in Fellbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Kernenturm stands as one of the region’s most charming historical lookout towers. Often overlooked by international tourists, this tower offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and panoramic views that stretch across one of Germany’s most picturesque regions. Located near Stuttgart, the Kernenturm is not only a cultural landmark but also a rewarding destination for hikers and nature lovers.

The Kernenturm is situated on the summit of the Kernen hill, which rises about 512 meters above sea level in the Schurwald forest, within the Rems-Murr district of Baden-Württemberg. The tower lies between several towns, including Fellbach, Esslingen, and Kernen im Remstal, making it easily accessible from urban centers while still offering a peaceful escape into nature1. Surrounded by dense woodland and intersected by scenic trails such as the Württemberg Wine Hiking Trail, the area is especially popular for outdoor activities. Visitors are rewarded with sweeping views over the Remstal valley, the Swabian Alb mountains, and even distant regions like the Odenwald on clear days2. Below is a map showing the location of the Kernenturm:

The Kernenturm dates back to 1896, when it was constructed by the Stuttgart branch of the Swabian Alb Association. Built from sandstone within just four months, the tower originally cost around 18,000 marks. It was a considerable investment at the time. Interestingly, the Kernenturm holds historical significance as one of the earliest observation towers in the region and the first ever built by the association. Over the decades, it has remained a symbol of early tourism and hiking culture in southern Germany. In 1930, an additional shelter known as the Anton-Entress-Hütte was added nearby, further enhancing its role as a rest stop for travelers3.

What makes the Kernenturm particularly fascinating is its architectural and experiential uniqueness. The tower stands 27 meters tall and features a square stone structure topped with a crenellated viewing platform. To reach the top, visitors must climb approximately 158 steps. An ascent that adds a sense of adventure to the visit. One of its most distinctive features is the extraordinary panoramic view. From the top, visitors can see vast stretches of the Stuttgart basin, the Neckar valley, and multiple mountain ranges. On especially clear days, visibility can extend up to 70 kilometers or more. Another unique aspect is that the tower is generally open year-round and accessible for a very small entrance fee (around €1 as of recent information), making it both affordable and welcoming. At its base, visitors will find a small kiosk, picnic areas, and even playground facilities, making it a family-friendly destination4.

Reaching the Kernenturm is part of the adventure. The tower is not directly accessible by car; instead, visitors must walk or hike through forest paths. Parking areas are typically located about 1.5 to 2 kilometers away, requiring a short but pleasant hike to reach the site. The most popular access routes start from nearby towns such as Fellbach or Stetten. Well-marked trails guide visitors through vineyards and wooded areas, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination itself. Public transportation to Stuttgart or Fellbach, followed by a hike, is also a common option for travelers5.

When I visited here, I took the bus to Esslingen. I got off at the Wäldenbronn Katzenkopf bus stop. From there, I walked through the forest. The area I passed through is perfect for those who want to go hiking or cycling. I met very few other people on the way, so this place is quite good for those of you who like a fairly quiet place. I recommend going in the morning or afternoon, but not in the afternoon or evening. Because the place is quite quiet. So if you are not used to being alone in the middle of the forest when it’s dark, the atmosphere will make you feel uncomfortable.

I took the photo above from one floor before the top of the tower. You might get a more beautiful view if you were actually at the top. Unfortunately, I’m afraid of heights, so I didn’t do that. Also, it might be even more beautiful if you visit during autumn, when the colorful leaves create a more beautiful atmosphere.

The Kernenturm is more than just an observation tower. It is an historical monument, a scenic viewpoint, and a peaceful retreat all in one. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a hiking lover, or simply someone seeking breathtaking views, this tower offers a memorable experience away from crowded tourist spots. Its combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and accessibility makes it a hidden gem worth discovering in southern Germany.
