The lake itself is relatively small, but what makes it unique is its origin: Hintersee was formed by a massive landslide thousands of years ago, which created a natural basin that later filled with crystal-clear water. The water is fed by glacier melt and mountain springs, making it exceptionally pure and cold, often allowing visitors to see deep beneath the surface. Another distinctive feature is the magical “Zauberwald” (enchanted forest) nearby, where moss-covered rocks and twisted trees create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere rooted in local folklore1.

I visited here in winter in 2024. It had snowed the day before, which is why there’s so much snow in the photos. Funnily enough, I wasn’t wearing adequate clothing. I was quite tortured by the cold and the pain in my hands. I strongly discourage repeating what I did. I left very early in the morning on a bus that went directly to the nearby bus stop. This place is one of my favourites, as it’s quite hidden from the hustle and bustle of the city.
